Family dog helps rescue freezing toddler

Published: February 5, 2007

A Kingston family’s pet yellow lab helped a frantic father find his 2-year-old boy who wandered out into the bitter cold this morning wearing only a light jacket and no shoes.

Kingston police, in a release, said the toddler was reported missing at 10:45 a.m. and was found “in the fetal position” on the frozen ground a half hour later by his dad and dog.

“The boy was conscious and alert,” police report.

Police said the father called out to the dog who then led the man to his son. The boy was found at 11:20 a.m. The boy was then flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Boston Medical Center in his father’s arms.

Police said the child left the house reportedly with the family’s yellow Labrador Retriever.

The boy wandered away through a rear sliding glass door and into the vicious 19-degree day with wind-chill factors as low as -4 degrees.

Police and fire officials from Kingston, Duxbury and the state police all assisted in the search. A K9 dog tracking unit from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s office was also rushed to the scene.

Nobody was home at the family’s Brookdale Street home this afternoon.
