Unknown heros save two adults, three children from car fire
Published: January 31, 2007
Robyn Glenn, her three children, and her boyfriend Michael Hollinger were on their way back to Topeka Saturday after spending the day visiting grandparents. After seeing smoke coming from the hood, the couple decided to pull off to the side of 75 Highway. But little did they know their lives would be in danger, and it would take a random act of kindness to save them.
“It was just a blink of an eye that it could’ve been our lives,” Hollinger said.
A charred shell is all that remained after a fire engulfed his car along side the highway. And even though he lost his car and some fishing equipment, Hollinger says he’s thankful he didn’t lose his life.
But he says he and his girlfriend and three children would have, if it weren’t for a stranger.
“It was a blessing that they had stopped and informed us because we would’ve been in those flames,” he said.
Hollinger says he had no idea his car was on fire, he thought the smoke rising from the hood was steam from a radiator hose. But once he found out, Hollinger and his girlfriend, Robyn, had to act fast.
“It took less than a minute for us to get out of the car, pull the kids out and by the time we got to the people and turned around, the interior of the car was up in flames,” he said.
Hollinger says it’s those two strangers who took the three children and put them in their truck while Shawnee Heights fire fighters put out the flames in the near-freezing temperatures.
And as rescuers worked the scene, traffic was backed up for miles on Highway 75.
And though these survivors are thankful for the quick response, they’re grateful for their unknown heros.
“It’s unfortunate that it happened but luckily there was people that cared enough to stop and actually assist and lend a hand and saved our lives,” Glenn said.
The couple says all they can remember about the two strangers is that they were driving a silver King Cab Pickup Truck.
And even though Hollinger and Glenn understand the dangers of stopping to help someone you don’t know, they wanted to share their story in hopes of inspiring others to help those in need.
