Dog saves owner from burning home

Published: January 31, 2007

A Tasmanian man owes his life to his dog after it woke him up during a house fire.

Brian Sylvester, 26, was sound asleep on his bed, in his Queenstown home, about 11.50pm (AEDT) yesterday when his dog leapt onto his chest.

“The dog was scratching me and sort of nudging me and I didn’t really know what was going on at the time,” Mr Sylvester said.

“I was still asleep and I pushed the dog away and it kept on going at me, and then I realised the house was on fire.”

The dog had pushed open a sliding door to enter the bedroom, Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) district officer Rob Deverell said.

Three units from the Queenstown brigade rushed to the home that was engulfed in flame.

“A male occupant was in his bedroom asleep at the time of the fire and was lucky to escape due to his dog … waking him up,” he said.

“The occupant woke to find the house was filling up with smoke.”

Mr Deverell said a poorly discarded cigarette had caused the blaze.

He also said it was not known whether the smoke alarm in the home had gone off.
