Dogs rescued from thin ice
Published: January 26, 2007
Two dogs learned about the dangers of thin ice the hard way. They fell through the ice on a small pond in Montville and were stuck in mud for hours.
Bailey the Boxer and Minnie the Springer Spaniel would normally be barking at strangers in their kitchen, but their wagging tails show they are just happy to be home.
The dogs are “more quiet, more sedate, not jumping around,” owner Tony Delgado said.
The two had quite an adventure. Paw prints next to ones which belong to a feathered friend show why they may have ended up in the pond.
“There was ducks on the pond too. That might have been what made them get out there,” Delgado said, and what may have gotten them into big trouble.
Bailey and Minnie were found stuck in mud up to their necks after falling through the very thin ice.
“It looks like they were almost in a begging type position when we got there,” Keith Milton from the Montville Fire Department said.
Milton dragged the dogs to safety by their collars. They had apparently broken through the invisible electrified fence in their yard.
The whole reason these dogs were saved is because at about 4:30 a.m. someone called police about dogs barking. By then the dogs had been out since seven and police believe they were stuck in the partially frozen pond for a couple of hours.
“Lucky it wasn’t somewhere secluded in the woods they fell in. The story wouldn’t have turned out the same,” Delgado said.
Even the police officer who first responded fell through the ice. Milton wore his cold water rescue suit because he was not going to take any chances.
“It really hasn’t been that cold though so really not too sure how thick the ice is,” he said.
Or how thin. A lesson others can learn from these guys who escaped with only mud matted hair and a few cuts and scratches. Whether or not they learn their lesson is yet to be seen.
“Only she knows,” Delgado said.
The Delgado family had searched into the early morning hours for their dogs. They are very grateful to Montville police and firefighters.
