11-year-old helping the homeless

11-year-old Juan Rivera is no ordinary kid. He’s a young man who knows what it’s like to sleep on the streets.
And he now serves as President of “Kids Who Care”, a group that raises money for the homeless.

“I was homeless once and I feel the people in our community shouldn’t be homeless. I feel they should have homes and places to sleep at night ”
Juan spent time in foster care before being reunited with his family. Together with his family he helped start “Kids Who Care.” They buy bus passes for people and Juan’s now thinking about buying bikes.

“(With) all this going wrong in our community, I felt that I had a need to fix it.”
In recognition of his giving spirit, Juan has been awarded the very first People of Pinellas award.

“It makes me feel awesome! It makes me feel like I did something good. ”
And this young man who’s overcome incredible obstacles has some advice for other kids who might also make a difference.

“Instead of just sitting at home playing video games, they should try to get active and give back to their community.”
In addition to his outstanding work in the community, Juan manages to maintain good grades at school. He’s on the honor roll and principal’s list. By the way, membership to “Kids Who Care” is $20 a year.
