A man who spotted smoke flowing out of a nearby house managed to rescue his disabled neighbor from the burning wood-framed home.
The victim suffered minor smoke inhalation at the scene and was taken to Palm Bay Community Hospital, fire officials said.
The fire, isolated to the living room, was spotted about 2:30 p.m. at a home on the 400 block of Bougainvillea Street in the northwest portion of the city.
“He needed assistance to get out of the home. The victim was disabled and he can’t walk very well,” said Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for Palm Bay Fire-Rescue.
Palm Bay firefighters arrived to find the smoke drifting out of the home. The small blaze was in the area of the victim’s aquarium, Martinez said.
“We don’t know if it was the wiring or what, but there was some malfunction in the fluorescent light fixture above the aquarium,” Martinez said.
Fire inspectors were at the home trying to determine the exact cause of the small fire. There was smoke, water and heat damage throughout the home.
