Kids Rescue Foster Dad

Published: January 24, 2007

Sirens and fire trucks are something no on wants outside of their home.

But last week that’s what happened to the Cooper family in Derby. Debbie Cooper woke up her husband because she heard a loud beep. “He opened the door and said the house is on fire. We were just bombarded at that time with smoke,” she said. They tried to open the basement windows but they were frozen.

Her kids, four of them foster children raced outside to safety. “We ran outside and I called 911 and told them to help us because my parents are trapped inside,” BreAnna Cooper said. They ran behind the house where their parents and little sister had broken out the window. “Little Destiny was just coming out of the window. And then I helped mom out. She was cut really bad,” Crystal Unger said.

By now everyone was safe except for the dad, Mike. He couldn’t fit through the window so the kids figured out another way to save him. Crystal wrapped a blanket around the window and started pulling. BreAnna started to pull too and eventually the entire window frame popped out. “It hit me in the leg and gave me a big bruise,” BreAnna said. Finally the family was safe. “I thank them everyday for getting me out,” Mike Cooper said. His wife called it a miracle.

But the Cooper’s feared their miracle would tear them apart. They’re now living in a hotel. To be a foster parent you must have a bed for every child. But none of the kids wanted to leave the Cooper’s after experiencing the fire. “I’ve been with them a year now and I’m really attached to them,” Unger said.

That attachment is why the state is letting the Cooper’s keep the kids. They’d rather them be together in a hotel than with another family. It’s something all of them appreciate. The Cooper’s will move into a rental home next month where they’ll live for six months. It’s expected to take that long to repair the damage the fire caused to the home
