Driver’s miracle escape

Published: January 24, 2007

A LORRY driver cheated death when his own HGV was shunted over him leaving him trapped under the back axle.

Paramedics and police officers were amazed to see him clamber out from underneath the 20-tonne tipper truck on Monday after it had been jacked up by firefighters.

Police believe the driver had got out of his vehicle and was inspecting the front of the cab when a silver Aston Martin crashed into its rear end at 11am on the A1000 by George’s Wood Road, Brookmans Park.

Somehow he fell in front of his truck and managed to avoid being hit by its massive wheels.

Paramedic Gary Sanderson told the WHT: “I couldn’t believe it! It was a miracle escape.”

Sub officer Paul Wilson, of Potters Bar fire station, said he thought the recent wet weather might have enabled the driver to squish down into the mud.

“He was lucky it was very soft ground,” he said.

The Hatfield-based rescue support unit had to be called to use its specialist equipment to lift the back of the white Scania truck up off the road.

Both the lorry driver and the driver of the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish were taken to the QE2 Hospital with minor injuries.

Both were later released after treatment.
