Officer Rescued Family from Burning Home

Published: January 22, 2007

Even though a house on Elm Street in Marshville is charred with the roof caved in, a mother and her two young children are safe.

That’s because Officer Michael Lovingood ran inside their burning home early this morning, saying, “Marshville Police. Your house is on fire you need to get out of here! She’s like ‘Are you kidding?’ Not believing what’s going on.”

Officer Lovingood saw the flames as he rode past the home about one o’clock Thursday morning. He tried knocking on doors to wake the family up, but had to kick the front door in.

He found them asleep inside the first room he searched. He believes,”the good Lord was with me on that, and guided me to go to my right instead of my left.”

Their next-door neighbor, Robbie Harris, also ran to help, “I ran down there, me and my uncle. We just told them to get out the house. I grabbed the two little kids and the police got the mother and I just brought them over my house.”

Even though the community has been quick to hail Officer Lovingood a hero, he says,”I’m no hero. I just did what I hope everybody else would do in the situation. I know the guys that I work with would have. They wouldn’t have hesitated; they would have been right there doing the same thing.”
