Dog gone it: 10-year-old boy reunited with his wandering, rambling dog

Published: January 19, 2007

If you held out a slice of salami, he’d come just close enough to scarf down the lunch meat before shying away.

Entertaining walks with elementary school kids only kept him occupied for a couple of minutes before he ran off into another western Waukesha yard. But when a close-knit community matched the descriptions on “Lost” signs posted in the neighborhood and at Bethesda Elementary School with their new “neighbor,” Bailey, the dog lost by the Carlson family, connecting the dog with his owners was just a phone call away.

At his southern Waukesha home Wednesday following his 10-day wild running spree that ended Monday, Bailey was cuddled by his four best friends, Alec, 10, Nathan, 8, Jacob, 5, and Abby, 3. As Abby petted her “furry” friend, Alec said the whole family was sad while Bailey was missing, an unusual act for the dog, a nearly 2-year-old Australian shepherd with a reddish-brown and white coat and spunky personality.

“He used to run over a few yards away to play with other dogs, but he never really ran far away. We could always see him,” Alec Carlson said.

The family left Bailey with the children’s grandparents at Kisdon Hills Court, where the antsy dog quickly made his escape. From there, Bailey spent the next 10 days wagging his tail through just about every spot in a two-mile radius. He was seen almost daily by residents there - poking through yards, playing with kids - though he didn’t make it easy for people to get close enough to read his dog tag through his shaggy hair, said University Drive resident Debbie Grabow.

“You just could not get a hand on him. He acted like he was going to bolt,” Grabow said.
