Woman Rescued By Stranger

Published: January 16, 2007

Strangers helping strangers. Monday night, it may have saved a life in Greensboro.

“I didn’t see any flames. I didn’t hear any noise. Nothing, until the gentleman knocked on my door,” says Mildred Kimbrough.

There’s not much left of her 1986 Chrysler after it caught fire. Her house also started to burn, but a quick-thinking stranger called 9-1-1 and then checked to see if anyone was home.

“I went up and beat on the door and she came to the door and I said ‘You need to get out of your house, it’s on fire!’” says Larry McIntosh.

He lives a block away and was just pulling out of his driveway when he saw the smoke.

“Some of the neighbors said they were in the back of the house doing things, so they really had no clue what was going on here. It could have gotten worse because it was already starting to get into the structure of the house,” McIntosh says.

He’s happy to have been in the right place at the right time. As for Mildred, she lost her car, but says she met an angel.

“Oh, I have thanked him and hugged him and shook his hand. God just put him in the way to see it and come and tell me,” she says.

There was no damage inside Mildred’s home. Investigators say a mechanical failure inside the car started the fire.
