Good Samaritan rescues stuck driver from upside-down car in canal
Published: January 16, 2007
A man was in critical condition at an area hospital on Tuesday after a Good Samaritan jumped into the water and rescued him from an upside-down car in a canal, police and firefighters said.
The accident occurred around 8:50 a.m. while the driver was southbound on Southwest 52nd Avenue at 32nd Place in the Everglades Mobile Home Park.
Rescuers said the unidentified driver, who is in his 50s, either missed a right turn or became ill and had some sort of seizure. The maroon Mercury sedan plowed through a wooden fence, a hedge, then a chain-link fence before flipping into the canal. The driver was stuck inside the upside-down car under water.
Firefighters estimate the man was underwater from one to 10 minutes before he was pulled to the surface.
That happened when an unidentified passerby jumped into the water and was successful in getting the man’s head out of the water and keeping it there until police and firefighters arrived and helped free the driver’s body.
The injured driver was rushed to Broward General Medical Center in critical condition.
The Good Samaritan disappeared.
