Love birds reunited

Published: January 11, 2007

After a harrowing journey across Sydney harbour, a domesticated white goose found its way back to her mate after 16 days Monday.

The female and its mate, owned by Barbara and Kevin Greig of Westmount, was spooked by a roaming dog Dec. 23 and thought to have been lost forever.

“We looked everywhere for her,” said Barbara. “We didn’t think she would have gone that far.”

Although they can fly, the domesticated birds usually don’t, which makes its journey to Whitney Pier so incredible to its owners.

Peter Steele, a good Samaritan on the other side of the harbour, first noticed the goose Saturday while walking his dogs along the nearby shoreline. He spotted it in his yard Monday afternoon as he was about to let the dogs out.

Wanting to help, Steele called Natural Resources to confirm the white goose was a domesticated animal.

He then notified the local radio station which sprad word of the lost goose over its airwaves. Hearing the lost and found announcement, the Greigs quickly picked up their goose then set up a joyous reunion with its mate.

“You couldn’t hear, it was so noisy between the both of them just quacking and going on,” said Barbara.

“They immediately went for each other. She went and got something to drink and some food and he just stuck right by her.”

The reunion scene calmed the male, named Blue Eyes, who was distraught the entire time his nameless mate was away, she said.

“He was totally lost without her. When she was gone he was following us around. He never did that when the female was there.”
