Dog Helps Patients Ease the Pain at the Dental Office
Published: January 9, 2007
No one likes to go to the dentist. It makes a lot of people nervous. But a Philadelphia area dentist has the answer, and his name’s Mr. Big!
He may not look like much, but this little guy is making a big difference for patients.
It’s a trip few of us like to take. It’s not about the dentist, but it’s the drilling, the poking, the prying. But doctor Elliot Ramer gives patients something as good if not better than a needle for pain. They have Mr. Big.
“I think it alleviates your fears a little bit.”
4 pounds, 4 year old, Mr. Big or you can call him Mr. B for short.
He snuggles in. He meets, he greets patients. The dentist brought him in about a year ago and took him to the adult day service in the building.
“They just loved him and he calmed everybody down.”
“Hello there. You know what his name is, Mr. Big, Mr. Big.”
“They love to just hold him, they love to just see him it something that give them enjoyment.”
“I love him cause he’s funny.”
“I thought if he’s good there maybe he can help my patients that come in that are very nervous.”
The bottom line is this:
“I think he takes them out of the dental office.
It gives them something else to concentrate on I think the patients are more relaxed and they, some of them, enjoy the appointment.”
“It’s comforting.”
Chihuahuas can be yappy and nervous. Not Mr. Big.
“Good upbringing I guess. Always upbeat, happy.
Never hesitates for a second to show his affection.”
So far, no problems between Mr. Big and the patients. He’s never made anybody uncomfortable or yipped at them.
