Motorist helps save girl in dog attack

Published: December 13, 2006

A passing motorist helped save a 16-year-old Brewster Academy student from a “vicious attack” by two dogs while she was running on Sunday morning.

Lt. Dean Rondeau, who said he could not release the name of the student since she is a juvenile, said the teen was jogging along Route 109 just north of the downtown area around 11 a.m. when a Belgian Malinois knocked her on the ground, bit her and latched onto her leg. Soon thereafter, a second dog ran out and also bit her.

As a result, the girl sustained injuries to her buttocks, thigh and legs according to police.

Police commend the actions of the passing motorist who spotted the attack.

“This courageous citizen was able to distract the dogs by sounding her horn and slamming her car doors. With the assistance of her children, the victim was taken to Huggins Hospital in this Samaritan’s private vehicle. This act of selflessness is commendable,” Police Chief Stuart Chase said in a press release.

“This could have been a real tragedy,” Chase said in the release. He added the witness accounts of the incident were “chilling.”

Rondeau said the girl’s parents picked her up on Monday to bring her home to New Brunswick, Canada, after she underwent surgery at Huggins Hospital.

“I’m sure she’ll recover,” Rondeau said.

Rondeau said police have spoken to the Carroll County Attorney’s office about the matter, which is being investigated with the help of the animal control officer.

Police said the breed of the second dog is unknown.
