Hero saved my life: Mississauga father
Published: December 12, 2006
A complete stranger who saved a Mississauga man’s life by pulling him from his burning vehicle was hailed as a hero yesterday.
Darren Coogan was driving to work on Hwy. 407 when he witnessed the crash that turned a van driven by Mississauga’s Satwinder Bajwa into a fiery wreck.
The crash happened on Nov. 11 about 11 p.m. Bajwa hit a deer then smashed into a pole. Coogan smashed the van’s window and pulled Bajwa from the burning vehicle.
The Mississauga man told The Toronto Sun he thought he was going to die that night.
“It was completely going to burn. They wouldn’t even have found bones there,” Bajwa, a 28-year-old father of two, told The Sun.
Bajwa, who broke his pelvis in the crash, said he was grateful for Coogan’s heroic actions.
Coogan, 29, was honoured yesterday at a Vaughan council meeting. He said he doesn’t think of himself as a hero.
Vaughan Deputy Fire Chief Greg Senay presented the citation to Coogan.
