Dog rescued from under ice
Published: December 12, 2006
This is the story of a truly amazing ice rescue involving two dogs and a pond. A quiet afternoon in Monroe County, Michigan, turned into a desperate attempt to save the animals’ lives.
Last weeek, Lisa Ost noticed a man headed to hunt in the woods on her parents’ property so she went to bring in her family dogs Sport and Josie. She quickly realized the dogs were in real trouble. The two had fallen in the pond and Josie was pushing Sport’s head under water as she frantically tried to get out. As Lisa, her brother and the hunter tried to break the ice to save the dogs, Sport took off swimming under the ice.
Sport swam under the ice from the middle of the pond where he originally went in all the way to this shoreline. He immediately collapased, but quick thinking helped save his life. Lisa Ost said, “My brother went into the water up to his waist and grabbed Sport. Sport’s eyes were rolled back in his head and he wasn’t breathing. My brother then hit him in the stomach and all the water came out. We thought he was dead.”
Sherryl Ost and her husband were not home at the time, but she’s grateful for the amazing effort from her children and the hunter to save the family pets. “My kids are heroes and so is the hunter (Stephen Bush from Detroit) who helped them rescue Sport. My kids say they couldn’t have done it without Stephen. It would have been too tough for them.”
Sport was first taken to a local vet for treatment and later rushed to the Animal Emergency and Critical Care Clinic in Toledo. The clinic’s Dr. Kittsen McCumber said, “When he first came in, he was quiet and subdued, but by morning he was wagging his tail. The family truly saved their dog.” Sherryl Ost said, “He’s back to being himself, wagging his tail. It was so quiet when he was gone. Now it feels like home again.”
Dr. McCumber says there’s an important lesson for all of us in this story. When it comes to animals, children and ice, always remember that there is no way to judge how thick or thin the ice is, so always keep kids and pets off it.
