Royals embrace Christmas with a Cop

Instead of just shopping for criminals this holiday season, some law enforcement officials from Topeka, Kan., are finding time to shop for those in need and they are turning to the Royals for a little extra holiday cheer. [A Cop’s Life: True Stories from the Heart Behind the Badge]
On Saturday, Royals president Dan Glass, his wife, Penny, and Sluggerrr Claus — the Royals’ official holiday mascot — will join the Topeka/Shawnee County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3 and Wal-Mart for the 2006 Christmas with a Cop event. Shopping with youth from the Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the event will provide items for more than 150 children throughout the day.
This season, along with scanning the Wal-Mart aisles on the day of the event, the Royals are financially supporting the event. Wal-Mart and the Fraternal Order of Police have worked together for the past 13 years, while this marks the Royals second year of participating in the holiday shopping spree.
“With the Royals’ help these past couple of years, we have been able to not only expand the number of children we help each year, but also give more to each child in the program,” said Jack Mackey, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3. “Basically, the Royals have taken a cause we care deeply about and given it a tremendous boost.”
Shopping begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT with Sluggerrr Claus dropping by for a holiday visit at 10 a.m. Following the shopping, the contingent will make stops at Saint Francis Hospital, 1700 SW 7th Street, and Stormont Vail Hospital, 1500 SW 10th Street to visit children undergoing treatment and make a financial donation to each hospital for the purchase of toys and games.
Earlier this week, former Royals outfielder Les Norman kicked off the Royals’ participation in area Shop with a Cop programs, joining the Lee’s Summit (Mo.) Police Officers Association on Monday to shop with a local group of underprivileged children. Norman helped the children purchase holiday presents for their families before returning to the police department for a gift-wrapping party.
