Trapped teen rescued from submerged vehicle

Published: December 5, 2006

A 16-year-old Sandpoint girl is recovering this morning from hypothermia after she was trapped in icy water up to her neck when her car rolled off the road yesterday morning.

The girl’s 19-year-old sister escaped from the overturned vehicle after it landed in a six-foot-deep inlet near Sunnyside in northern Idaho and submerged the front two-thirds of the car.

The young driver, whose name was not released, was able to keep only her head above water until emergency crews arrived and began diving under the water to try to release the girl.

She was freed from the vehicle after about 30 minutes and was airlifted to a Coeur d’Alene hospital, where she is being treated for hypothermia.

Several rescue workers were also treated for signs of hypothermia
