Authorities rescued 30 teenagers and their teacher Monday after their school bus veered off the road and was left teetering over a slope and in danger of overturning.
The driver lost control of the bus near the village of Villaviciosa de Odon, 18 kilometers (11 miles) northeast of Madrid. The bus, carrying 30 schoolchildren aged 16-17, came to a halt at a 45 degree angle over a slope, with two of its wheels off the road, local government officials said.
Emergency services, contacted by the driver by mobile phone, advised the passengers to move to one side of the bus to help counterbalance the vehicle’s tilt.
Rescue teams then managed to evacuate the teenagers, their teacher and the driver, and there were no injuries, a spokesman for the local government of Villaviciosa de Odon said on condition of anonymity in line with his department’s practice.
