A VILLAGE hotel and restaurant owner says he is astonished everybody survived a high-speed crash on the A64 Scarborough to Malton road in which a driver was hurled through the back window on impact. The main road had to be closed and traffic diverted through nearby villages following the horrific accident close to the Greyhound pub at Ganton.

Police said the crash involved a red Peugeot 205 travelling towards Scar-borough and a silver Renault Clio going in the opposite direction.

The 18-year-old driver of the Peugeot was taken by air ambulance to James Cook Hospital in Middles-brough suffering from serious head injuries. He was said to be comfortable in a trauma ward but not in intensive care.

A 19-year-old male passenger in the Peugeot was taken to Scarborough Hospital along with the 24-year-old male driver of the Renault. They were treated and discharged.

Both occupants of the Peugeot were from the Scarborough area but police have refused to say where the other driver is from.

Simon Branston, 37, who runs the Greyhound pub, said: “Both vehicles were unrecognisable as cars. They were just crumpled.

“The wheels came off one of the cars. I am astonished anyone survived.

“This is the third or fourth accident here in the past year. They need to do something to slow the traffic down.

“After one of the previous accidents a car skidded 300 yards down the road and ended up outside the pub door, and about 10 years ago a lorry actually came through the pub.”
