“The horses are being treated by a vet,” Riverside County Fire Department spokesman Patrick Chandler said. “The others seem to be OK.”
A dozen horses were trapped inside a barn in the 28700 block of San Timoteo Canyon Road in Calimesa when a fire broke out around 8 p.m. Wednesday night, according to the fire department.
Engine crews responded to the fire, and found the blaze “fully involved.” Two ranch hands managed to free the horses minutes before firefighters arrived, according to the fire department.
Two of those horses received major burns and one received minor burns, according to the fire department. The two rescuers were treated for smoke inhalation at an area hospital, Chandler said.
The fire department spokesman said the veterinarian who checked the horses expected all of them to recover. The fire destroyed the barn, valued at $500,000, Chandler said.
