91-year-old Rose Cappola says she was sleeping around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when her 4-year-old terrier mix Josie started making noise.

“She sleeps here on the bed with me, and all of a sudden she just started barking and I was wondering what she was barking at,” Rose Cappola told CBS4.

“So I get up and I went into the living room and I said ‘I smell smoke’… so I called the fire department.”

It turns out her furnace wasn’t working properly and it was filling her home with smoke.

Firefighters rushed over, opened all the windows, and then told Rose she was going to hospital for tests as a precaution.

Because of Josie, Cappola didn’t need any treatment. She was glad she went to the hospital.

“I had a good examination” she said.

She said her smoke and carbon monoxide detectors weren’t working - because the batteries were dead. Her nephew is now replacing them.

Rose has lived in the home for 50 years. She’s had Josie for four years.

“I’m so thankful she woke me up…. She loves everybody,” Rose said.
