Girl donates Bibles for charity

Published: November 27, 2006

A young girl’s dream to spread the joy and hope she believes can be found in the word of God had turned into a reality.

Ten-year-old Mackenzie Burrus recently delivered a Bible for each of the 75 patients served by the Adolescent Forensic Program (AFP) at North Texas State Hospital here. The program serves adolescents from 13 to 17 years of age.

Four patients who are members of the Peer Leadership student council of the AFP were on hand at the Paradise House facility to accept the Bibles from Mackenzie. Mackenzie’s parents, Bobby and Carrie Burrus, her sister, and grandmothers were also on hand.

Carrie Burrus said that on a trip to Dallas, her daughter became concerned about the many homeless people on the streets. She wanted to give them hope for their lives. Mackenzie felt that if they could learn about God and his power, it might help them have some hope for a better life.

When she got home, she discussed her idea with her family minister, Rev. James Hodsden, minister of First Presbyterian Church. He signed off on the project and encouraged members of their church to “get behind her” with more support.

“Bibles for Hope” became a reality. Mackenzie set out to raise money for her project. She sent out letters to family, friends, local churches and others telling them about her project. Her mother said that a lot of donations came in from “word of mouth.” In a little more than a month, Mackenzie raised about $1,600.

Burrus said her daughter’s next project would be to distribute Bibles to the young people at the Wichita Falls Campus of the North Texas State Hospital.

She also plans to give out more Bibles during the Christmas holidays and try to be sure that all the kids included in the Star Tree program receive Bibles.

Burrus said Mackenzie plans to buy Bibles for the area homeless, take Bibles to the Food Bank in Wichita Falls, and distribute them in homeless shelters in Dallas.
