Tearaway terrier is reunited with family after three-week ordeal
Published: November 20, 2006
A young Border Terrier was reunited with its owners on Saturday after spending three weeks stranded on an exposed cliff face in the West of Scotland.
Now back home and well on the way to recovery, 18-month-old Daisy found herself stranded on a small ledge 20ft above the sea after falling through overgrowth at the top of a cliff in mid-October.
Owner Caroline Stewart had travelled to Carradale on the East coast of Kintyre with her three children to spend half-term at their holiday home, while husband Neil stayed on the family farm in Eckford. But the trip turned sour when, following a walk across the local golf course on October 12, the young pup failed to return to the house.
Despite spending several days searching and putting posters up around the area, there was no sign of the terrier and the distraught family were forced to return home without the much-loved pet.
On October 29, two divers from the Oban area heard a dog barking while passing the foot of the cliffs below the golf course, but assumed it was coming from the course.
However, on returning to the same place four days later, the pair were surprised to hear the dog again and, on closer inspection, found the pup stranded on a 2ft ledge jutting out from the cliffs.
After being lowered to safety from the ledge, Daisy was returned to Neil’s cousin at Dippen Farm in Kintyre who immediately took her to the local vet for treatment. And, despite being noticeably weaker and thinner, the shell-shocked terrier was given the all clear to return home.
The family, who were contacted with the good news last Thursday, were ecstatic to hear that Daisy was alive and well. Eight-year-old Charlie Stewart said: “I just went ‘Yes!’”.
Neil continued: “We’re absolutely over the moon. We thought she was gone and no-one was really talking about it because everyone was so upset. Daisy is a bit of a scally wag but she’s never done anything like this before.”
