Injured dog rides to vet in style
Published: November 15, 2006
One lucky Shih Tzu received the ride of a lifetime Tuesday — a trip in an ambulance after being injured in an accident.
On Tuesday, MD Ambulance paramedics were called to a vehicle collision involving an 85-yearold woman from Assiniboia. The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. beside the Husky gas station on Highway 16. [ER Vets: Life in an Animal Emergency Room]
The woman was struck from behind at a high speed by a truck, which knocked her vehicle into a semi. The woman only received minor injuries thanks to her seatbelt. The only other passenger in the vehicle was Mitzi, a fi ve-year-old Shih Tzu. The dog was not restrained and suffered bruising and cuts above his right eye.
After transporting the woman and her dog to Royal University Hospital, paramedic Christine Janzen was concerned Mitzi may have suffered a concussion, so she had him taken by paramedic supervisor Lana Danylyshen to the University of Saskatchewan veterinary college for examination.
“Transporting animals is something we don’t normally do but the 85-year-old patient was extremely upset with her dog’s injuries so we made an exception,” said MD Ambulance spokesperson Troy Davies.
“(Mitzi) was very calm and he just laid there resting comfortably,” Danylyshen said. The last she had heard, Mitzi was waiting to be released from the vet.
Danylyshen said the accident is a reminder that all passengers, whether human or not, should wear some sort of restraint.
Davies said this is the only time he can recall an animal getting to ride in ambulance, but he said Mitzi “won’t be billed” for the trip, which usually costs around $300.
