House warden honored: went beyond call of duty
Published: November 3, 2006
A sheltered housing warden who went beyond the call of duty to catch a group of would-be thieves from breaking into the home of elderly residents, has received an award for her heroism.
Not only did June Finnie see the intruders come into the Blalowan Park complex where she has been Fife Council’s sheltered housing officer for 20 years, but she took photos of the men and followed them in her car.
Her quick-thinking actions soon lead to police uncovering the culprits and preventing them for targetting anyone else in the area.
Her information also lead to police detecting 20 crimes committed in Fife and Tayside by the same men.
June, who received a Scotland’s Heroes Award from First Minister Jack McConnell recently, said she was “over the moon” to receive the award.
“I saw the men acting suspiciously and while one of the residents, Blalowan Park tenants’ and residents’ association chairman George Constable, phoned the police, another two or three residents helped me watch the men try to get into the houses,” she recalled.
“I then followed them in my car and took photographs.”
Speaking about her day in the limelight, June added: “I had a lovely day out at Edinburgh Castle where the ceremony was held and then we had dinner in Dunfermline with some of the other Fifers who had received awards.”
