Teen’s Heroic Effort Saves Great-Great-Grandmother

Published: November 2, 2006

A heroic 17-year-old boy saved a 91-year-old woman from her burning home as she slept last week, Westminster fire said.

Kyle Wagner was walking home from Northglenn High School when he smelled smoke coming from a house. He quickly told an 8-year-old boy who was also walking home to call 911, firefighters said.

Wagner said he knew that an elderly woman and young children lived in the house, so he covered his mouth and went into the home to search for anyone inside, despite his asthma.

“I didn’t want (the childrens’) grandma to die in the house (so) I just ran inside and got her and saved her life,” Wagner said. “Gosh, she’s pretty cool.”

He found Lydia Cooper, a 91-year-old great-great-grandmother asleep in her bed. Wagner woke her up and helped her get out of the house safely.

Firefighters said Wagner went back inside the house two more times in search of the young children who also lived there. Fortunately, they were not home at the time of the fire.

“The smoke was pretty bad, and my asthma was getting bad too,” Wagner said.

Firefighters said Wagner’s heroic and unselfish actions likely saved Cooper from suffering from extensive smoke inhalation.

Both received medical attention and were taken to a local hospital. Firefighters said the fire and smoke was caused by a smoldering pan of sauerkraut in the kitchen and was quickly extinguished.

The Westminster Fire Department nominated Wagner for its Citizen Lifesaving Award.
