Miner a major hero

Published: November 2, 2006

AN ORDINARY hero who today saved the life of a truck driver and averted a serious accident with a daredevil stunt doesn’t think his actions are anything to make a fuss about.

Mick Thompson, a belt engineer at the Pelton colliery in the Hunter Valley, climbed into a moving semi-trailer this morning after noticing its driver was passed out.

His action stopped the truck from crashing - not that Mr Thompson thought it a big deal.

“The truck was going reasonably slow along the road and he was sort of swerving towards the centre line and it was obvious that it was a mishap, something was wrong and there was a collage of cars behind him all lined up,” Mr Thompson told Southern Cross Broadcasting today from 7km underground at Austar mine in the Hunter Valley.

“So I basically did a u-ey and overtook them all and then did a u-ey heading back towards work to confirm that something was wrong with the driver, and sure enough he was slumped over the wheel.

“So I stopped my car, jumped out, ran across the road, jumped on the truck, opened the door and um, yeah mate, dropped it into gear and put my foot on the floor on the brake and stopped the truck.”

But Mr Thompson did not believe the rescue made him a hero.

“It’s something that any sort of decent human being would have done,” he said.
