Cat beats death by a whisker
Published: October 30, 2006
IT looked like the end of the road for a little kitten after he ran into the path of a bus.
Driver Mark Cave stopped his Metroshuttle single-decker and he and his passengers started to search around for what they feared would be a rather mangled moggy.
But there was no sign of the ginger tom.
And Mark, 46, was forced, with a heavy heart, to continue his journey.
However, he and his caring passengers hadn’t reckoned on the old saying about a cat’s nine lives.
After his vehicle arrived at the Queen Street depot in Cheetham Hill, about half a mile from the drama in Deansgate, he heard a strange sound from under the engine .
A quick search of a space next to the battery compartment revealed the terrified six-week-old kitten - in hiding, but amazingly unhurt.
A relieved Mark said: “I could hardly believe it. I thought I had well and truly squashed him, but I was delighted to hear his cries.”
The adventure did not end there for the brave little kitten. Mark said: “He belted out from under the bus and ran across the garage - it took about five hours to find where he was hiding!”
After being located underneath another bus, the gutsy survivor scored yet another lucky break.
Carmel Collins, who also works at the bus depot, said: “He was tucked up in a cardboard box - our eyes met and I just knew I had to have him.
“We think that he was a stray, so I took him back to my house and he pretty much started to rule the roost straight away.
“He seems to be very happy here - he’s a star.”
And his new name? “Metro,” said Carmel.
“Mark’s bus was a No2 Metroshuttle so I thought it was quite appropriate.”
Now he’s looking forward to a life - probably all eight remaining ones - being pampered.
