A warm welcome home was provided to military working dog Rex and his handler MA1 Christopher Calloway after receiving the Hero Dog of the Year Award in St. Louis last week.
The German Shepherd Club of America recognized Rex for his heroism during a six-month deployment to Afghanistan and for his role in the prevention of drug trafficking in the war-torn region.
”They are thrilled that they received the Hero Dog of the Year Award,” said MA1 Kyle Strobeck, NSB Kings Bay kennel master. ”Because of their dedication and heart, they are already pursuing their next challenge”
At the national awards program. Rex was given a place of honor along with other German Shepherds who were also recognized for their outstanding dedication to their work.
After receiving the award, Rex and Calloway provided a demonstration of the skills that have set them apart from most dog handling teams. During the demonstration, Calloway lead Rex though some tactical maneuvers, and finished up with attack and control work. Calloway also, explained the five phases of aggression while working Rex through attack phases.
”During the demonstration the crowd seemed to disappear as Rex and I focused on each other,” said Calloway. ”At the end everyone cheered and complemented us on how well we did, and that they have never seen a dog and trainer move in unison like that.”
Now that Calloway and Rex have returned Calloway says that he learned some new thing about the German Shepherd and how diverse and useful the breed is to law enforcement.
”It’s time for Rex and I to get back to doing what we do best,” said Calloway. ”Lets go catch some bad guys with drugs!”
