Mom Calls Son A Hero For Saving Her Life In Norfolk Apartment Fire

Published: October 16, 2006

Investigators continue their search for what caused an apartment fire, in Norfolk. Meanwhile, a mother involved in that fire says her son is a hero, for saving her life.

Patricia Salaam says her teenage son was awake Thursday night. However, she was asleep in her bedroom, when the fire started in another apartment, in the building at 112 W. 39th St.

Salaam says her son, 15-year-old Elijah, smelled smoke and woke her up. The two got out on the fire escape.

Patricia Salaam says, “He saved my life, and I didn’t lose any of my children. We’re all fine…And I’m glad I responded when he did wake me up. I’m glad He wasn’t asleep.”

Salaam has another teenage son, 17-year-old Bukhari Salaam. He was not home when the fire started.

The family is getting help from the Red Cross. The organization is helping 11 adults and six children, left out in the cold by the fire.

The fire has been ruled an accident and started in the bedroom of a third floor apartment.
