Boy’s Recovery A Miracle

Published: October 12, 2006

In August, 11-year-old Torin Constable fell from a tree and crushed his skull on a paving stone. Now, just two months later, Torin is back in school after a remarkable recovery.

When Torin first came into the Nebraska Medical Center, doctors were not optimistic.

“They were very upfront with you about everything the first few days that he was in there,” Torin’s mother Missy Constable said. “They told us things didn’t look good.”

But Torin defied the odds, was released from the hospital and went directly to rehab. Now he is back in the halls of Andersen Middle School, but not everything has gone his way.

“They won’t let me play baseball yet,” Torin says.

The southpaw may be able to take the mound again next summer. Physically, Torin is close to where he was, but gym class is still a challenge and his short term memory is spotty.

Torin has also changed some since the accident. He doesn’t like the taste of some of his favorite foods anymore, and he can no longer taste pop.

Still, his parents say Torin has been more outgoing in the last two months, and he is as anxious as ever to get back on the field.

“They won’t let me play baseball just in case I get hit in the head by the ball even though I have a facemask and a helmet,” he said.

For now, the 11-year-old is focusing on school and getting better every day.

There is no telling how long it will be before he is completely back to normal, but Torin’s doctors are not putting many limitations on him.

Torin’s father, Howard Constable, said, “They’re just totally amazed of his recovery and how he’s come out of it and basically don’t understand how it happened, other than it was a miracle.”
