Stranger Rescues Woman from House Fire

Published: October 11, 2006

A rural Butler County woman is lucky to be alive, after a stranger goes to great lengths to rescue her after her home catches fire.

The fire ripped through Jeremey and Rachel Young’s home early Tuesday morning. Rachel says what scares her most, is that she did not wake up.

Rachel was sound asleep when flames licked the sides of the house and quickly spread inside. The next thing she knew, someone was pounding on her door.

A complete stranger was on her way to work, when she saw the fire from the road, and stopped to make sure no one was inside.

Rachel opened the back door and asked for help; the two women then got all the animals out, and waited for firefighters to arrive.

Rachel’s husband Jeremey was at work when he got the call. He says he could not even tell if it was his wife on the phone or not; all he heard was fire, and to get home. When he did, everything was gone, including the bedroom where Rachel had been sleeping.

Amazingly, Rachel, five dogs, a bird, and a cat all escaped, thanks to a woman Rachel had never met. Rachel says she appreciates her stopping, and saving her life.

The woman who came to Rachel’s rescue is Betty Wheeler, who works in Rosehill. Her boss tells KAKE News Betty is too humble to talk on camera, and that she did what anyone would do.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
