Girl in miracle escape after being hit by car

Published: October 11, 2006

A TEENAGER cheated death after she was knocked down in a busy street as she made her way to school yesterday morning.

The 14-year-old girl was hit by a car as she crossed Well Street in the West End of Paisley around 8.45am.

One witness told the Paisley Daily Express: “I saw the car hit the young girl and she went right up in the air and over the top of it.

“It was a terrible bang and I got a real fright – I really thought she might be dead. It was awful. I grabbed my keys and got my neighbour before we ran out.”

Another witness said: “I saw the girl lying face down in the road being comforted by concerned members of the public who were keeping her warm until an ambulance arrived.”

One woman who was driving a silver Renault Megane and had witnessed the accident, used her own coat to wrap up the schoolgirl and keep her warm until paramedics arrived on the scene and took control.

They attached a neck brace and carefully rolled her on to a stretcher, all the while reassuring her that they had the situation under control.

One passer-by said: “The girl seemed to have been conscious through her terrible ordeal although she was clearly distressed as she was stretchered into the ambulance.”

The driver of the black MG car looked shocked as a crowd began to gather and traffic backed up along both sides of the street.

Concerned residents looked on at the dramatic scene from their houses in Well Street and nearby Arthur Street.

The ambulance took the girl to Royal Alexandra Hospital where she was treated for a head injury.
