Death-defy kitten reunited with family

Published: October 6, 2006

A CAT found stuck in the bodywork of a car has been reunited with his delighted owners.

“Archie” – so-called by the firefighters who rescued him from behind the wheel-arch of the car – is actually Morty, named after one of Blackpool’s greatest footballers.

Only four months old, Morty was supposed to be house-bound but slipped out when a door at his St Annes home was left ajar.

Owner Helen Lamb, 30, leafleted all around her Dalton Street home but as the days passed she thought the kitten, bought as a birthday present for son Josh, seven, had vanished forever.

Then, she opened The Gazette and saw Morty starring back at her from the page. We told how a motorist from Cleveleys had been dropping a friend in Poulton when he heard a distressed cat meowing.

After much searching, 20-year-old Brett Dawson saw Morty stuck between plastic and metal behind the passenger footwell of his MG Rover and firefighters had to take the car apart to free the terrified feline.

The crew from Bispham Fire Station kept Morty – named after Stanley Mortenson – safe, warm and well-fed following his ordeal, before handing him to the RSPCA.

Mrs Lamb said: “We were beginning to wonder whether we would see Morty again.

“Josh was distraught but then I got the biggest shock when I opened the paper. I knew instantly that was Morty.

“He may have lost a bit of weight but it was definitely him.

“We are all so happy to have him back.”

Margaret Bysterboch, from the Fylde branch of the RSPCA, said: “We are glad this story has such a happy ending.

“Morty had been missing for more than a week and had been on quite an adventure so we are delighted the Lamb family have their pet back.”
