Grandmother leaps from plane for charity

Published: October 5, 2006

Attleborough grand-mother Betty Kemp came down to Earth from 10,000 feet to help East Anglia’s mercy crew of the skies.

Betty Kemp, 74, of Chapel Road, leapt at the chance of the skydiving challenge with her granddaughter Rebecca Kemp on Saturday.

And between them they raised more than £1,000 for the East Anglian air ambulance.

Betty had raised £1,004 in August just by standing outside the Sainsbury’s store in her home town.

But she was inspired to embark on a more adventurous money-raiser by Peter Mendham, Norfolk co-ordinator for the air ambulance’s fundraising team. She explained: “I sponsored him to do a parachute jump some time ago and I thought to myself: ‘If he can do it, then why can’t I?’

The jump took place over Old Buckenham airfield. “It was absolutely brilliant. We thought the weather might let us down, and I would

have been so disappointed if it

hadn’t gone ahead,” said Betty.

And she revealed that she was earning quite a reputation locally for her efforts to help good causes.

“The people of Attleborough are scared of me!” she said. “They see me coming and know that I will be asking for sponsorship or a donation of some kind.”

Rebecca said she was more anxious than her grandmother before the jump. “She absolutely loved it and wasn’t nervous at all. I originally booked mine with my friends, but my nan found out and said she would like to do it with me,” she said.
