Neighbours turn heroes in dramatic fire rescue

Published: September 21, 2006

NEIGHBOURS rushed to the rescue when two women were trapped in their smoke-filled home.

The drama unfolded on Sunday morning when Julie Deacon of Grafton Road, Dagenham, noticed smoke billowing out of the house opposite.

She rushed over to check on the occupants and found her neighbour, believed to be in her 50s, hanging out of the window with smoke pouring out around her.

Colin White, who also lives in the road, said: “Julie called the fire brigade and while they were waiting for them to arrive she was trying to calm the woman down, telling her not to worry because they were on their way.”

The next door neighbour was also panicking as she was trapped indoors with her baby.

In the meantime, a passer-by pulled up and grabbed a ladder from another property.

“He put it up against the wall and climbed up. He tried to convince her to climb out, but she couldn’t so he jumped down and started trying to kick the door down.”
