Cat Spent At Least 1 Life After Sewer Rescue

Racing against time and the elements, a police officer plunged beneath the city streets Tuesday afternoon to save a bedraggled kitten caught in a storm sewer.

Storm clouds hovered over the scene, threatening a downpour that could have drowned the frightened feline.

Finally, to cheers from a small crowd gathered on East Main Street, Police Officer Ken Ruge emerged

His prize — a small brown and white cat with damp fur matted with slime. The little creature blinked in the sunlight and looked around nervously at the cheering people.

“Wow, he got him! He got him!” exclaimed 11-year-old Pedro Roma.

“This is what makes this job so rewarding,” Ruge said as he put the kitten into a cage.

But the incident might have ended differently.

Jose Binet said he was walking along East Main Street near Cedar Street around 1:30 p.m. when he heard the cat crying from the depths of a storm drain.

“I looked inside, but all I could see was water and junk,” he said.

Soon, others gathered and craned their heads, trying to find the fallen feline. Through the darkness
