Hero cop finds missing canine colleague

Published: September 20, 2006

Crime-fighting Metro Police sniffer dog Benji has been found safe and sound - thanks to a fellow officer.

Metro Police spokesperson Louise Brits said Benji was found early on Tuesday in Hebron near Ga-Rankuwa.

The hero of the day, Metro Police Constable Everson Manyane, was the first to spot Benji and helped to bring him home. Manyane is a member of the Soshanguve Metro Police Section 1 and is currently on sick leave following a motorbike accident.

He said: “At about 2.30am I heard my puppy barking and I went to investigate. I saw a strange dog outside and I remembered the report I’d read in the Pretoria News about Benji being missing.

“I phoned Acting Superintendent Sam Mathabathe and Sergeant Phanuel Nthatheni of the Tshwane Metro Police’s Dog Unit and described the dog to them. When they arrived the dog was gone, but we heard other dogs barking and started searching,” he said.

The three men found Benji two streets up and Mathabathe called Benji who responded to his name and ran to the vehicle.

“He was dirty, hungry and tired. We were afraid he might have been injured, but luckily he was just fine,” said Manyane.

Benji’s handler, Inspector Stephen de Vos, was notified and it made for a touching reunion. “When we saw each other, Benji jumped into my arms, and there were a lot of tears,” said De Vos.
