Community Honors Local Hero

“He’s an angel… he’s they’re guardian angel.”
An angel dressed in blue who just a month ago made a quick arrest after a man with a gun who tried to abduct two teenage girls off their own front porch. After the suspect was taken into custody police linked him to several home invasions and a rape.
The girl’s mother says thoughts of what could have been makes her sick with fear. “All of the thoughts go through your head… what was he going to do with her,” the girl’s mother said.
So Tuesday night, a grateful community honored Officer Terrence Black for jeopardizing his safety to secure theirs.
Kenneth Hyers, a neighbor of the girls said, “I’m sure the Commissioner gets 10,000 letters on what they did wrong. We’d like to say hey, they did something right and thank you.”
A humble Black was appreciative of the recognition, but more appreciative of how neighbors assisted him that night. When the suspect tried to grab the girls, Kenneth Hyers and other neighbors heard screams for help. Hyers managed to get close enough to scare the suspect off and give police a description and a plate number. An example, Black says of how putting fear aside and speaking up can help exterminate violence and win back neighborhoods.
“They can’t be afraid,” said Terrence, “because (then) these guys will just continue running around the neighborhood doing what they do.”
