Woman rescued, cat resuscitated

Published: September 4, 2006

FIREFIGHTER rescued a young woman and her cat from a fire that extensively damaged a home in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs this morning.
Two MFB crews arrived five minutes after the first report, soon discovering a woman trapped by the flames and thick black smoke in the long, narrow dwelling at the back of a hairdressers shop on Lower Dandenong Rd, Mordialloc, Operations Commander Colin Matheson said today.

“They were bringing up the lines when they heard the woman calling for help,” he said.

Firefighters smashed a window to pull the woman to safety, and found black moggie Malcolm while searching for other occupants.

“They found the cat in the back room under a bench, and he wasn’t very well,” Mr Matheson said.

Fire crews treated the woman with oxygen until an ambulance arrived, before reviving the cat in a similar fashion, he said.

The absence of a smoke alarm could have slowed the arrival of crews, and Mr Matheson urged homeowners to install and maintain smoke alarms.

It is believed the fire started in the couch in the lounge room, and although the cause was unknown the fire was not being treated as suspicious, he said.
