Daughter is father’s hero
Published: September 4, 2006
On this the day before the anniversary of Katrina, I would like to tell you of my personal hero, my daughter.
She was living in Slidell at the time. Fortunately she evacuated, the day before. She had to go almost to Dallas before she found a place that had rooms and that would take her beloved dog, Harley. She remained there for 10 days until it was determined that it was safe for her to return to Slidell to evaluate her personal situation. What she found was what many people found — she had lost everything. The house she lived in was still standing but it had had 6 to 8 feet of water. She subsequently moved in with us in Ocean Springs. Fortunately her job as a contractor working with the military was not affected and she was able to start pulling her life back together.
Two to three months later she was informed that the contractor she was working for had lost the bid to another company and the project was moving to another state. She was now out of work. This lasted three months until she finally landed another job in Montgomery, Ala. This company subsequently had the project they were working on terminated by the military and she was out of work again.
Three weeks later while setting at a red light she was hit in the front of her car by an older person that couldn’t make a turn, her car was totaled. She rented a car and came back home.
Four weeks ago while attempting to get in our above the ground pool, she fell and had to have her mother help her get up. Things got progressively worse and we finally rushed her to the VA Hospital in Biloxi. They determined that her liver had enlarged because of the Hepatitis B she contracted while serving 11 years with the Navy. This in turn caused a reaction that attacked her nervous system in her legs, and she no longer has the strength in them to walk. They admitted her to the hospital where she has been since August the 12th. She has just been moved to the extended care ward as they think it will be at least another month before she is strong enough to leave.
Even though she has been through a lot in this past year, she has never once stopped fighting and has never expressed one ounce of self pity.
