Stuck cow airlifted to safety from mountain stream
Published: August 25, 2006
A ten year old cow weighing 400kg named ‘Portuguesa’ that got stuck three days ago after falling into a stream on a steep wooded slope near the towns of Navarredonda and San Mamés to the north of the Madrid region, is safe and well following her rescue by the regional fire-service’s mountain rescue team yesterday.
The cow went missing three days ago while grazing with six others, but was no found until yesterday morning.
She had to be sedated to stop her kicking her rescuers while a special harness was fitted that enabled her to be lifted free of the ditch by helicopter.
Apart from one or two cuts and bruises, ‘Portuguesa’ seems unaffected by her experience, and is reported to be grazing normally.
