A DOG had a lucky escape after it fell 200 feet down a cliff at Saltwick Nab and survived unscathed.
The drama unfolded on Tuesday morning when coastguards were called to the cliff close to Cleveland Caravan Park at around 9.10am.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Elmo had slipped down the cliff face while its owners, from Sheffield, were walking with the dog along a clifftop path.
Two teams of coastguards from Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay joined forces to abseil down the cliff face in search of the injured animal.
Luckily this particular rescue had a happy ending and the dog was freed from a bramble bush at the base of the cliff unharmed.
Watch manager, Andrew Mahood said: “He didn’t even need to see a vet and was over the moon to be brought back to his owners.”
The owners, who did not want to be named praised the coastguards’ efforts.
“They were great, they were here half an hour after we called.
“They did a fantastic job.”
Coastguard Ben Wedgwood who helped in the 50-minute rescue said: “People must remember to be careful with dogs on such paths and keep them on leads.”
