Police say it is a miracle six school students escaped with only minor injuries as steel girders speared through the windows of a bus in a collision with a truck in Adelaide. [Photo]
The teenagers suffered only superficial injuries when the truck’s load of steel broke free under the impact of the crash, which happened during this morning’s peak-hour.
It was unclear how many students were on the bus at the time.
One child aged 13, three aged 15 and a 17-year-old were taken to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital for treatment.
A 15-year-old was also taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital to be treated for minor head injuries.
A police spokesman said the bus had been taking a number of students to various schools in the area and, after the crash, many of the youngsters had left the scene before patrols and the emergency services arrived.
The accident brought commuter traffic on Payneham Road at Payneham, in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, to a standstill.
The road was blocked for several hours as a heavy lift crane was brought in to remove the damaged vehicles.
Police have been contacting schools in the area to check on the wellbeing of students who walked away from the smash and to offer counselling if necessary.
