Meet Polly the hen – queen of the dog show

Published: August 24, 2006

IN A dog-eat-dog competition, it was Man’s Best HEN who took the top prize.

Polly, a 15-week-old Golden Speckled Poland hen, won the best-in-show award at Wildboarclough DOG Show.

But her 13-year-old owner, Jack Farmer, insisted the decision was not bird-brained. There were over 200 entries in 18 classes at the dog show, held at Blaze Farm, ranging from pedigree dogs to fun categories like the dog with the waggiest tail. And there was a class for other pets than dogs.

Polly defeated two guinea pigs to take the top spot.

She was then entered by default into the grand final, where the winner of each class competes for the best- in-show award.

Despite the four-legged entrants, Polly showed everyone the true pecking order, and won the title.

Jack, a Fallibroome High School pupil from Macclesfield, bought Polly as a chick for £5 from friends in Buxton. Since then, he has brought her up for the last four months.

He said: “She probably won because of her behaviour and because she’s used to me.

“When the judge went round, Polly was just sitting on my arm. She could have flown away but didn’t.

“She has great faith in me – and that’s what I’m most happy with,” said young Jack.

He is a hen fanatic and reckons he knows 115 breeds off by heart. He has high hopes for his feathered friend.

“I’m definitely going to enter Polly into more competitions, and have her checked out to see if she has the right shelling head and feathers,” he added. “If she wins more competitions, her value could go up from £25 to as much as £200 – if she becomes British champion!”

Considering that the Blaze Farm show was a real dogfight, it’s safe to say, “Polly won a cracker of a title.”
