Kindest cut: girl donates hair

Published: August 24, 2006

Katie Mulhollen has been growing her hair out for the past nine years, which to some may not seem like a long time, but for this little girl it’s meant a lifetime of tangles, hair pulling and difficult-to-manage ponytails.

On Aug. 26, just two days after her ninth birthday, Katie plans on cutting her hair. A stylist at Loveland Hair Design is going to cut off nearly two feet of hair from Katie’s long tresses. After that the Loveland girl will ship the hair to Locks of Love in Florida, where it will be transformed into a wig.

“Once my hair got so long, I thought, ‘why cut it off and not do anything with it?’ So I got the idea to donate it,” Katie said. After nine years of having more hair than she knows what to do with, Katie decided it was time for a new hair style.

However, even after cutting 24-inches of hair from her head, Katie’s hair will still be pretty long. After the new hair-do, her hair will go down to her waist.

Tina, Katie’s mom, is proud of her daughter.

“Personally I’m doing a dance of joy because she’s cutting her hair. But I’m very proud of her that she’s wanting to donate it,” Tina said. “Locks for Love is a wonderful organization. We’ve had several friends with cancer and this is kind of a tribute to them. It’s bittersweet I guess.”

Tina said besides trims, Katie hasn’t had a hair cut since she was a baby. Katie never seemed to mind though. With long hair the style possibilities are endless.

“When you grow it out this long you see a lot of hair-dos, you can do a lot with it,” Katie said.

Tina feels that Katie’s act of generosity is spurred from the fact that Katie, herself, came from an act of generosity. Katie is the first child born from the Gordon Gift of Life Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps defray the cost of fertility procedures at Christ Hospital for couples seeking to begin a family.

“Gordon Gift of Life Foundation’s first born is giving back,” Tina said. “When you’re given a gift you feel like you need to give.”

Katie is nervous about getting her hair cut, but she doesn’t think she’ll cry to see it all chopped off. However, John, Katie’s dad, probably won’t watch Katie get her hair cut, Tina said. He’ll be too upset.

“I’ll be happy that somebody who has to lose their hair will have a wig of my hair. It feels really good to give something to somebody,” Katie said.
