Rescue hero plucks girl from river

Published: August 23, 2006

A little girl who fell into deep water was rescued by a passer-by.

When five-year-old Khadija Banaras slipped and fell into Hinksey Stream, in Hinksey Park, Oxford, at 4.30pm yesterday, a man ran to her rescue and pulled her out.

Kadija’s mother Halima Banaras, 26, of Giles Road, Littlemore, Oxford, spoke out to thank the man she praised as a hero. She said: “What this man did was absolutely amazing, and I want to thank him through the Oxford Mail.

“It all happened so suddenly and it was such a shock that I didn’t get his full name.

“I think his first name was Roger. He was walking with his wife and children. “I am so grateful to this man for what he did. He’s a real hero. If I’d have had a cheque book with me I would have written him a cheque out straight away.”

Mrs Banaras was attending to her 14-month-year-old daughter Fatimah when she heard a splash as Khadija fell in.

She had been playing with her nephew and niece Abu-Bakr Banaras, five, and Amina Banaras, four, near the water. As Mrs Banaras ran to the river the rescuer was a few steps ahead and was able to pull her to safety. She said: “Khadija normally walks along by the river and she’s fine, but there was a metal bit and I think she just slipped on it.”
