Humble hero to be recognized

Published: August 23, 2006

For lending his hand to help save a life, a golf course worker who pulled an injured man from a fiery car wreck will get kudos from firefighters for his heroics.

But humble lifesaver Jerry Savoy says he’ll share the credit with a bystander who helped in the rescue after a car went over an embankment and burst into flames Monday morning near the Country Hills Golf Club.

“This guy should be recognized,” said Savoy of a bystander known only to him as Dave.

“When I struggled getting the guy out of the car and fell backwards on the hill, this Dave guy helped out.”

Together, they pulled the injured 20-year-old to safety.

Regardless, the Calgary fire department is planning to give Savoy a much-deserved commendation, which could be anything from a certificate of merit to a Governor General’s Award, said spokesman Shawn Williams.

“The guy would have likely died in the vehicle if he hadn’t helped out,” said Williams, adding firefighters on scene were quick to praise the efforts of Savoy.

The golf course arbourist was working nearby when he heard about the early-morning crash of a westbound Mustang GT that jumped the curb of Beddington Trail N.W. near Berkshire Blvd. and raced to find the car on fire on the side of the hill with a man trapped inside and labouring to escape the wreck.

Savoy pulled the dazed and injured 20-year-old out of the back window, dragging him to safety before flames engulfed the vehicle.

“I’m really relieved he’s going to be OK,” said the 41-year-old Savoy, who found out the man he saved is in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

“Basically, I helped him get out of the car — it’s not the biggest deal in the world,” Savoy said.

“It’s really nice to get acknowledgement from the fire department, but maybe the young guy will have a long life and a bunch of kids, and that’s the reward for me right there.”
